EYFS

Learning Through Play

In the EYFS, at Bewick Bridge, we foster your child’s own interests and offer activities that extend, enrich and develop each individual child’s potential. We actively encourage ‘play’, more technically known as Child Initiated Learning. Through play, children develop intellectually, creatively, physically, socially and emotionally. In the EYFS we use Development Matters to plan and provide a range of meaningful and tailored activities to suit each child's individual needs. In some of these areas, children decide how they will use the activity and in others, an adult takes the lead. The skills developed in preschool align seamlessly with our reception provision and continue into the Year 1 curriculum and beyond.

Throughout your child's time in preschool and their Reception year, their independent play and teacher-led learning will be supported to help them develop their knowledge, skills and understanding in these seven areas of learning:

Early Learning Goals

At the end of the Reception year, children's competencies in the seven areas of learning are reviewed against 'Early Learning Goals'. These are statements of desired knowledge, skills and understanding. Information about the Early Learning Goals and what this looks like in a Reception child's learning and play can be found here.

The home - school connection

Bewick Bridge's Early Years team use an online learning journal called Tapestry which helps school and home to record, track and celebrate children's progress in early years education.

The EYFS is a stimulating and exciting environment that provides many opportunities for the children to explore and learn from. Tapestry enhances this special time, helping teachers and practitioners to capture children's experiences as well as monitor development and learning. This unique journal is shared online with parents, who are able to see special moments and view their child's progress.

Text, images and videos can be easily uploaded via PC, tablet or our mobile app - anywhere there's an online connection. Every entry helps to create a complete story of a child's time in the EYFS.

When a pupil joins our Reception or Preschool classes we invite parents to join the Tapestry family by sending an activation email.
