Our Young Interpreters help children who are new to our school and whose English is not their mother tongue. They use different strategies to clarify, explain and interpret as well as make our EAL children feel welcome in their new environment. Young interpreters are brilliant communicators and models of English, they help to reiterate our school rules and procedures and most of them were once new EAL pupils themselves. They are trained by the Young Interpreter Coordinator and they have regular meetings throughout the year.
From our training day
Our pupils said:
“When I first started at Bewick Bridge, a Young Interpreter from my new class looked after me. She was really caring and helpful. Now it is my turn to give that caring, helpful and kind back to someone who is new at our school.“
“I would like to be a Young Interpreter as I love helping children who struggle in a new school. I would like to welcome them and help them to fit in, I would like to show them where everything is and I would like to help them with their English.“
